A collegiate squad composed of players from leagues like the University Athletic Association of the Philippines and the National Collegiate Athletic Association will comprise the national squad for the 2019 Southeast Asian Games.

Philippine Football Federation president Mariano “Nonong” Araneta said the national squad is now being formed with University of the Philippines coach Anton Gonzales calling the shots.

“We will have a team for the SEA Games, and it’s an under-22 squad,” said Araneta.

The national squad will have its exposure when they join the 2019 ASEAN Football Federation U-22 championships in Cambodia from Feb. 17 to March 2.

The tournament, which will involve 11 teams, will be held again for the first time since 2005, with Thailand the defending champions.

Consultant Scott Cooper, according to Araneta, will be around to give Gonzales a hand in gearing up the U-22 squad.

The only obstacle in the formation of the team is the approval of the UAAP to release their players for the meet.

The Philippines is in Group A with Vietnam, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Laos, Brunei and the Philippines, while Group B has Malaysia, Myanmar, Indonesia, Cambodia and Singapore.
