Phoenix, Mahindra try to climb standings

TWO important games featuring four of the teams in the bottom half of the standings take place in the homestretch of the elimination round of the 2017 Philippine Basketball Association Philippine Cup.

Teams with contrasting streaks open hostilities as slumping TNT KaTropa (4-4) and streaking Mahindra (2-5) test each other at 4:15 p.m. at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City today.

That will be followed by a battle between Phoenix (4-4) and NLEX (2-6) at 7 p.m. in the nightcap.

All four teams are facing must-win situations as they are all currently in dangerous positions in the race for the top eight.

After starting out 0-5, the Floodbuster suddenly came alive, winning their last two assignments to stay alive.

Its last victim was Meralco as it surprisingly dominated the Bolts, 105-92, last week through Philip Paniamogan’s career-high of 25 points.

“It’s good to be back in contention for a spot in the top eight but we’re still far off. We need to continue winning games,” said Mahindra coach Chris Gavina.

On the contrary, after a solid 4-2 start to their campaign, the Tropang Texters suddenly found themselves in disarray, losing their past two games this year with the last one being dealt by Star, 88-77, just last Sunday.

It’s been an up-and-down journey for Phoenix this conference as it mostly alternated wins and losses leading up to its even slate.

The Fuel Masters came completely flat in their last outing, falling down hard against Rain or Shine, 97-82, more than a week ago.

The Road Warriors are also not having a good run as they have yet to adjust to the ways of new coach Yeng Guiao with wins hard to come by.

GlobalPort tripped them, 110-96, the last time out as disappointment continues for the squad.
