Carlos, Zoleta clinch semis berths in Andrada Cup netfest

TOP seed Macie Carlos and second pick Gaby Zoleta downed separate rivals on Tuesday to reach the girls’ 14-under semifinal in the 28th Andrada Cup Junior Tennis Championships at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center. 

Carlos stamped her class over Bettina Catoto, 6-0, 6-0, to advance against Justine Maneja, a 7-5, 6-0 winner over Kaye Ann Emana.

Zoleta, niece of national players Bien and Bambi Zoleta, scored a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Julia Ignacio to forge a semifinal showdown with Kryshana Brazal, a 6-0, 2-6, 10-7 winner over Mica Ella Emana. 

Kaye Ann Emana also made it to the 12-under seminal round after posting a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Alecsa Czarina Ilano, She will be up against Marielle Jarata, who defeated Sofia Gomez, 6-0, 6-0.

Meanwhile, Aljohn Talatayod ousted No. 4 Jeremiah Macias III, 6-0, 6-2, and Jules Lazaro stunned No. 6 Aidyll Ignacio, 6-4, 3-6, 10-4 to reach the boys’ 18-under quarterfinals of the Group 1 tournament supported by former Philta vice president Manuel Misa of Altamar Shipping, Thaddeus Sporting Goods and official ball Babolat.

In other matches, No. 5 Emmanuel Fuellas won over PJ Quizon, 6-0, 6-2, and No. 7 Jake Martin scored a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Chester Tiongson.

In the boys’ 16-under division, fifth seed Jan Harold Trillanes rallied past Jerome Ignacio, 6-3, 2-6, 10-5, to arrange a quarterfinal duel with top seed Janus Ringia, who demolished Michael Tullo, 6-0, 6-0. Other winners were No. 3 Jose Antonio Tria over Jeremiah Macias IV, 6-0, 6-0; No. 6 Angelo Aparte over Daniel Estanislao, 6-0, 5-4 (ret.); No. 7 Athan Arejola over Jude Hidalgo, 6-2, 6-2; and No. 8 Jules Lazaro over Rameses Ian Valebia, 6-0, 6-0. 

Trillanes, also seeded fifth in the boys’ 14-under category, prevailed over Shant Nuguit, 7-5, 7-5, to advance in the quarterfinals against top seed John David Velez, a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Joshua Diva. Also advancing were No. 2 Rupert Tortal, No. 3 Miguel Luis Vicencio, No. 7 Prince Luis Salvacion, No. 8 Axl Lajon Gonzaga and John Allen Rombawa.
