PBA to TV5: Revise proposal

The Philippine Basketball Association wants TV franchise holder ABC 5 or TV 5 to go back to the drawing board and submit a revised proposal on its telecast of the pro league’s games, which are coming off a record-breaking Commissioner’s Cup. Former chairman Rene Pardo told the Manila Standard that ABC 5 proved to be much better than previous coveror IBC 13, but that a proposal to telecast the second game live at 8:30 p.m. was not acceptable to a majority of the board members, who also ruled out a proposal for the games to be telecast on Action TV 41. The new telecast proposal was a result of the termination of the ABC 5 contract with IBC 13, with the government reportedly bent on selling the sequestered network at the end of this year. Pardo noted that even when the main game begins at 7:30 p.m., “many fans are seen standing up to leave the coliseum to catch the last MRT trip, so to delay the games even further was not acceptable.” He said a move to Action TV 41, a UHF channel was bound to result in former PBA chairman Lito Alvarez of Air21 raising the issue of why the league rejected his support for a Studio 23 telecast initially when it is a far more established network that said channel. Meanwhile, after anchoring Air21 solidly in the first two conferences of the season, Nino Canaleta got himself a nice pay day. The Express gave the versatile swingman a maximum three-year contract extension due to his impressive showing this season. Air21 head coach Franz Pumaren was happy for his top gun as he knows he earned what he got. With Jeric Lopez
