How does an ordinary guy get the beautiful woman?

No, this is neither your guide to finding the woman of your dreams nor a list of practical tips on increasing your odds in the dating game. It’s a question I had when I first saw the poster of the The Write Moment, a film that stars Jerald Napoles and Valeen Montenegro.

Directed by Dominic Lim, The Write Moment was an original entry to last year’s QCinema International Film festival.

At first, since it’s a romantic comedy, you’d think that it’s kind of your fantasy version of Kita Kita with Jerald as your Empoy and Valeen as your Alessandra de Rossi. But there’s more to it than the beautiful girl meets not-so-handsome guy premise. The movie presents surreal moments that can take viewers to a wildly entertaining trip to the dark side of love.

'The Write Moment' is a film about a heartbroken writer trying to get back with an ex through his romantic comedy hugot script but fails and instead finds himself magically living-out the scenes he has written.

Here, Jerald is a wedding videographer and occasional movie script writer named Dave. He writes a screenplay depicting their happy ending and surprisingly finds himself living out his written story with a mysterious twist. Veleen, on the other hand, is Joyce, Dave’s dulcinea.

Unlikely as their pair may be, this team up proved to be an effective combination in presenting the poignant yet hilarious scenes of fantasy love story gone wrong.

Anyone who has suffered heartbreak, or even those who have a penchant for stories of the lovelorn who still fight for love, will surely relate to this film’s unorthodox hugot lines and laugh at the cheeky humor of this fantasy comedy.

The story itself is an existential journey depicting the realities of life and love, which is perfectly played out by Jerald and Valeen with their palpable chemistry and their own individual flairs and eccentricities.

“If you already have the chemistry, the only thing that you need is the right timing,” Valeen said referring to her being cast with Jerald.

“Honestly, I would want any other leading man than Jerald. I was comfortable with him and I trusted the director because I was in good hands,” Valeen said and added,”He his passionately funny.”

Asked if she can fall in love with an ugly guy she responded, “I am more of a conversational type of person who finds someone’s humor attractive. Hindi ko sinasabing pangit si Je, kasi yan yung parang gusto niyong palabasin.”

According to its director, the film is inspired by his experience. He wrote the story not exactly to get back with an ex through his romantic comedy hugot script but to imagine what would be the closure like be to his unsuccessful romantic experience if he had made some different decisions.

“In a sense, may pinanggalingan siya. The film is not exactly based on my experience though but the scenes that we have on this film are very sincere. I had a heartbreak years back and we didn’t have a proper closure. So what I did, I wrote a story that would serve as conclusion to that romance that didn’t have a happy ending,” Lim shared and further added that for him making the film was both experimental and therapeutic.

Produced by IdealFirst Comapany and Viva Films with CMB Films, The Write Moment opens in cinemas nationwide on Wednesday.
