‘Alisto’ turns 4

Alisto celebrates its 4th anniversary today with a special hosted by Arnold Clavio who investigates accident-prone areas in Metro Manila and provides solutions to these problems.

According to road safety experts, most vehicle collisions occur at intersections. In the cities of Caloocan and Parañaque, accidents at intersections are mostly due to motorists’ violation of the right of way, which results to sideswiping and rear end crashes, among others.

An assessment of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) reveals crash occurrences at intersections are attributed to the lack of traffic and road signs.

To address this problem, Alisto tapped local government units (LGU) and the DPWH to conduct “Project Road Safety’’ at accident-prone intersections. The mission is to set up traffic and road signs to prevent further accidents from happening.

Apart from accident-prone areas, Alisto also features crime-prone barangays. The Quezon City Police District listed top 10 barangays where crime is most prevalent. Barangay Socorro tops the list. According to the barangay chairman, incidents are usually petty crimes like pickpocketing, shoplifting, and snatching.

To address the rising crime incidence, barangay police conducts night patrol in the community. The barangay has 57 CCTV cameras installed in different alleys and streets. But these cameras were not able to cover the entire area.

Meanwhile, in Barangay 696, Malate Manila, crime incidence is lower, as shown on the records from the Manila City Hall. The barangay has installed 16 CCTV cameras in the community. However, some of the cameras are damaged. It is in this light that Alisto embarks on another mission: “Project CCTV” by installing new CCTV cameras in the barangays.
