Who really killed Victor Buenavidez?

As the primetime series The Good Son nears its conclusion, that is still the question foremost in the minds of the audience that religiously follow the saga of the Buenavidez family and the Reyes family that got embroiled in the investigation of the murder of Victor Buenavidez (Albert Martinez) at the beginning of the series some six months ago.

Last Monday, with other members of the media, we drove to the Tivoli Royale, a gated community east of Manila, where the cast and crew of the series were shooting several scenes.

The cast of the top-rating evening drama, 'The Good Son.'

When the director called for “lunch break” Jerome Ponce, McCoy de Leon, Nash Aguas, and Joshua Garcia joined us for a brief chat on what to expect from the show. Though it hasn’t been announced yet, I got wor d that it will run for just four more weeks till its finale in April.

The four boys were joined by their leading ladies or the girls in the series played by Loisa Andali, Elisse Joson, and Alexa Ilacad.

The cast said  that tomorrow, Friday, the show will give the viewers a hint of who really did Victor Buenavidez in.

Is it any of the four guys – Joshua, Jerome, Nash, or McCoy? Or will it point to other possible suspects including the two major female characters played by Eula Valdez and Mylene Dizon? Some are expecting it will fortify the theory of the driver Dado (Jeric Raval) as the real killer.

Everyone among the young members of the cast didn’t want to say anything that will spill the beans.

Joshua, the perceived “good son” said, “Watch out for my character as I will be less ‘kikimi-kimi’ then. You will like me even more.”

Jerome, the perceived “bad boy” of the series, told me, “You will be in for more surprises. I won’t tell you, but I hope you’d watch the show even more.”

Joshua and Jerome are pitted against each other in the series, the former being the son out of wedlock (or what is generally known as “bastard’) while Jerome plays the son in Victor’s legal family.

While in the show they have contrasting personalities, off screen the two are friends and look at their characters in the show as part of their development as actors. Jerome, in particular, welcomes the role not only as a challenge to him as an actor, but as something that he is able to explore in terms of characterization in movies and on television.

McCoy, the other guy and plays Joshua’s half-brother in the series, said he was surprised of the twist his character has gone through and becoming an asshole to his brother and other family members. “I wasn’t expecting it until I go the scripts for the episodes we would tape that my character, Obet, has developed into some kind of an asshole, but I am excited because it gives me the chance to show off whatever acting talent I have.”

He said, if another offer of the same character comes in the way, he’d still take it.

Loisa and Elisse were very firm in saying that the roles they play in the series have given them insights of how people behave in certain situations. The former plays the childhood friend of Jerome but in the series she is more drawn towards Joshua after Jerome treated her rather badly after the death of Victor.

She added that her character’s being torn between the two leading men challenges her to make sure she plays it convincingly.

Loisa, who’s the other half of the love team McLisse, said her relationship with McCoy is still spirited but emphasized they’re not in a hurry to make any commitments. McCoy agreed especially now that they are both busy with the series and their characters continue to evolve. In vernacular, McCoy said, “It’s not unusual if I carry on the character I play even back home. I still have a difficult time shaking it off, so most of the time I stay longer with friends if only to bring me back to reality.”

The Good Son has been earning favorable notices, not only from viewers but from very discriminating critics as well saying this is one of the better crafted local drama series in years.

Its ratings hit an all-time high on national TV with a 21 percent on its timeslot (it fades in at around 9:20 p.m. or earlier but not later), according to Kantar Media.

Definitely, I will miss this show when the curtains close on its telecast next month.

The previous video, released late last year, gave viewers a glimpse of how a creative team brainstorms for a potentially viral ad, bringing together Anne’s wacky self, local pop-culture references and the 1970’s song hit “Loving You” to humorously promote the product.
