Big Emmys takeaways

The Emmy nominations on Tuesday saw Game of Thrones and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel dominate nods for honors but there was plenty of recognition for other shows.

Big Emmys takeaways
Beyonce has been nominated in three previous occasions, including for this performance at the 2013 Super Bowl halftime show, but has never won.
Here is a selection of takeaways from the best of the rest:

Beyonce

Queen Bey racked up six nominations for her Netflix special Homecoming: A Film by Beyonce, which gave fans an intimate look at her performance at the Coachella music festival last year, when she became the first black woman to headline the event.

The live concert film was nominated for outstanding variety special, as well as writing, production design, costumes, directing and music direction.

Beyonce has previously been nominated for an Emmy—in 2013 for her Super Bowl halftime show, in 2015 for her On the Run Tour with husband Jay-Z and 2016 for her album-filmLemonade—but has yet to win the award.

Sexual abuse documentaries

Leaving Neverland, and Surviving R. Kelly, two documentaries on sexual abuse, were among the shows nominated for an Emmy.

HBO’s four-hour Leaving Neverland, which features testimony by two men who say Michael Jackson sexually abused them as children, earned five nominations, including for directing and picture editing.

Surviving R. Kelly, which features testimony by more than 50 people who say they were abused by the R&B superstar, received one nomination for outstanding informational series or special.

The nomination comes just days after the singer was arrested on charges of recruiting underage girls for sex and attempting to cover up the crimes.

Handmaid’s Tale

Despite its latest season not being eligible in key categories this year, The Handmaid’s Tale still managed to get 11 nominations including for outstanding writing for a drama and directing.

The series, which won best drama in 2017, was not eligible to compete in top categories because it missed the eligibility deadline.

The Emmys only recognize shows that were on in the 12 months to May 31. But the show made 16 technical category submissions for episodes from the tail-end of the previous season.

Multiple nominees

A number of multi-talented stars were recognized across a range of categories or productions this year.

Natasha Lyonne and Phoebe Waller-Bridge both secured acting and writing nominations for their work on Russian Doll and Fleabag, respectively.

Bill Hader went a step further, appearing in the lead actor, writing and directing lists for HBO drama Barry.

Killing Eve actresses Fiona Shaw and Sandra Oh also picked up additional nominations for their guest roles on other shows—Shaw for Fleabag, and Oh for her appearance on Saturday Night Live.
