Playwright Layeta Bucoy adapts classic Spanish play ‘Bodas de Sangre’

Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature Hall of Famer and multi-awarded playwright Layeta Bucoy recreates Bodas de Sangre, (Blood Wedding), the classic tragedy by internationally acclaimed Spanish dramatist, theater director, and poet Federico García Lorca for a special showcase by the budding thespians of De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB) come July.

'El Mar de Sangre' (The Sea of Blood) is Bucoy’s Filipino adaptation of Garcia Lorca’s 1932 three-act play. 

Titled El Mar de Sangre (The Sea of Blood), Bucoy’s Filipino adaptation of Garcia Lorca’s 1932 three-act play transports the spectators into a humble town bordered by three seas where the community anticipates a much-awaited union through marriage.

Directed by Gawad Buhay Philstage Awardee and Virgin Labfest Festival Head and dramaturg Tuxqs Rutaquio, it narrates tragic romantic endeavors between a young lady (Sara Louise Garcia) her bridesgroom (Karel Coldenhoff) and her lover (Karl Caminade) as their fates were shaped and challenged by the cycle of time, the weights of choices, the consequences of deception, and the reality of fate and nature. 

The rest of the cast includes nanay (Jannah Baniasia), biyenan (Jana Isabel La Victoria), asawa (Phoebe Louise Lina), buwan (Isabella Pedersen), kapitbahay (Robyn Antonio), Kamatayan (Jan Enrique Capinianes), and mangingisda (John Marticio).

Bucoy’s translation breathes new life to Garcia Lorca’s remarkable characters, plus redesigned and grounded their trajectories in the Filipino context, culture, and identity.  

Spearheaded by Benilde’s Theater Arts Program, this production is a collaboration with the creative efforts from the College’s Arts and Music Cluster, with participation of its Music Production (MP), Multimedia Arts (MMA), Arts Management (AM), and Production Design (PD) Programs.

The college allows aspiring artists to develop their skills and knowledge under the guidance and meticulous mentorship of award-winning industry fellows. Its wide range of courses cover vast areas of theater studies from literature analysis and interpretation; direction, design, and performance conceptualization; resource, equipment, and instrument utilization; and play production to business and marketing Integration.

El Mar de Sangre will open its doors to the public on July 3 to 6, and repeat performances on July 10 to 13, with shows at 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. at the 5/F Theater of De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde’s School of Design and Arts (SDA) Campus, 950 Pablo Ocampo (Vito Cruz) Street, Malate, Manila.
