Longevity in the music industry is exemplified by the songs that live on through the years, serving as a part of the soundtrack of our collective lives. One such song is “Torete,” which was released by Moonstar88 18 years ago, now back in popularity with a new generation of listeners across different platforms.
Moonstar88 (with Maysh Baay on vocals, Buddy Zabala on bass, Herbert Hernandez on guitar, and Bon Sundiang on drums) has been making waves this year, via their classic hit that garnered the no.1 spot on the Billboardph Catalog charts in October 2017. The song topped the most popular local song list released three years ago across all genres, ranked by streaming from Spotify, Youtube and Apple Music. Reaching this milestone is considered as a great achievement for the song and the band because the Billboard charts is the music industry standard record chart for songs based on different measures such as sales, radio airplay and online streaming.
“Torete” is proof that great music never grows old, and its timeless message will always be appreciated through the years. The band was a recipient of the Alta Media Icon Awards, the student choice award giving body of The University of Perpetual Help System (Las Pinas campus). They were recognized as Band of the Year 2017 by the school’s Communication Arts students.
As a thank you to their fans they call “Moonstareros,” the band released a special edition “Torete” shirt in celebration of the 18 years of support that the song has received. The song has had its different iterations and interpretations by fellow performing artists and its being chosen as part of the soundtrack for movies, such as Star Cinema’s Love You to the Stars and Back. The song continues to top Spotify’s viral playlist.
This year, they offered another treat for their fans: The local music industry legends and upcoming artists were tapped by Coca-Cola to not only pair up to collaborate on a new song, but also to interpret their partner artist’s original song and give it their own flavor. The music event, called CokeStudioPH was able to give Moonstar88 fans their fresh additions to the local music industry.
