Ogie Alcasid’s musical journey

Next year in September, Ogie Alcasid will stage a grand concert at the Araneta Coliseum to mark his 30th year in the business, but before it happens, the singer-songwriter has another equally good reason to perform live in a big venue.

On  Friday at the KIA Theatre, Alcasid is putting his fame and fortune to good use by celebrating his birthday with a one-of-a-kind concert dubbed NakakaLokal! based on his recently launched album of the same title.

The concert, which the 50-year-old singer describes as “a musical journey,” will benefit child-focused humanitarian agency World Vision and its advocacy campaign, “It Takes a World to End Sexual Exploitation against Children.”

“It’s their 60th year this year, and we were planning for a special project. So, it makes perfect sense to come up with a concert dedicated to the children of World Vision,” Alcasid told Manila Standard in an interview.

As a staunch supporter of the non-government organization, Alcasid sponsors a child and regularly visits the indigenous people in Zambales. This immersive experience has touched his heart that’s why he decided to commit himself to doing well-meaning initiatives.

It all started in 2009, according to Alcasid. One day, people from Word Vision approached him and his wife Regine Velasquez for a serious discussion over dinner.

“How could I say ‘no’ to them, it was free dinner,” Alcasid said in jest then shifted to a serious tone saying, “They invited us to be ambassadors of World Vision, without any commitment. They just wanted our time if our schedule permits it. Then our first mission was in Zambales to meet some indigenous people.”

On his first visit to the Central Luzon province, Alcasid noticed the tribe didn’t have any musical instrument. At their church, they were just using wooden sticks when they sing.

“The next time we went there, we brought a sound system. And using the same equipment they immediately performed for me. It was heart heartwarming,” the singer shared.

Every year, since then, he would go to Zambales to visit the community and check how they’re doing. And, he believes that this life changing experience wouldn’t have happened if he didn’t join the people from World Vision who approached him to be one of the faces of the NGO that currently assists over 75,000 children across the country.

“The concert will not just feature a segment that will highlight World Vision and its effort in giving abused and underprivileged children a better life. The whole concert is actually dedicated to the organization and its continuous effort to help children all around the country,” Alcasid affirmed.

The concert’s repertoire, the singer-songwriter furthered, will be entirely OPM. The songs he will be performing will be the hits from the past decades including the most recent tracks that he popularized.

He will be joined by Angeline Quinto, Basti Artadi, Davey Langit, Erik Santos, Iñigo Pascual, Jaya, Kyla, Lara Maigue, Leila Alcasid, Lovi Poe, Men and Music, Solenn Heussaff, and Yeng Constantino.

“I’m really looking forward to this concert. We are working hard to come up with a grand musical experience, which started from recording section by section – the rhythm, strings, percussion and so on. It’s a tedious job but I enjoyed the whole process so much. It’s not just putting songs onto a CD, it’s a journey. And it’s the same experience that I wanted to share with people during my concert,” Alcasid concluded.
