The Cascades’ enduring love affair with Pinoys

They were one of the last American groups that came out with a hit before the British Invasion in the ‘60s, with their song “Rhythm of the Rain” considered as one of the most performed songs in the 20th century.

This year, John Claude Gummoe and The Cascades return to Resorts World Manila (RWM) on Aug. 3 to once again take audiences down memory lane.

Apart from the catchy and melodic vibe of “Rhythm of the Rain”, the group is also known for their vocal harmonies that turned such favorites as “For Your Sweet Love”, “The Last Leaf” and “Shy Girl” into hit singles.

After their last RWM performance in 2015, The Cascades with original lead singer Gummoe, is slated for another memorable night of music at RWM’s Newport Performing Arts Theater (NPAT) with special guest, former The Lettermen vocalist Mark Preston to add nostalgia to the concert.

The Lettermen was a vocal pop group who generated hits including “When I Fall In Love”, “The Way you Look Tonight”, “Going Out Of My Head/Can’t Take My Eyes Off You”, and “Hurt So Bad” among others.

Through the years, both Gummoe and Preston have brought their respective groups’ cherished love songs to audiences all over the world, and one of their favorite stops has always been in Manila, where they even give some Tagalog songs a twist of their trademark American candy pop for their Filipino fans.

Gummoe, who will be celebrating his 79th birthday a day before their NPAT performance, still has the moves and music in him that captured the attention of music fans during the ‘60s. He had come out of retirement 12 years ago and answered his second calling to perform live in 2005. In the country, he had already toured Cebu, Davao, Baguio, Clark, Bacolod, Tacloban, Olongapo, Iloilo, Cagayan de Oro, Tagaytay, Roxas, Ormoc, Iligan, Butuan, Legazpi, La Union, and Tagum, showing much love for his music fans in the Philippines.

Roll down memory lane with a set of classics from some of the main movers of ‘60s American pop. Catch The Cascades featuring John Claude Gummoe with special guest Mark Preston on Aug. 3; 8 p.m. at the NPAT.
