Orange is the new black

And Jessy Mendiola is wearing something in that color in the Metro Manila Film Festival entry The Girl in the Orange Dress.

Jay Abello, director of the film, admits he is still nursing a hangover from the 1999 British film Notting Hill (Julia Roberts, Hugh Grant) about a Hollywood star meeting accidentally and falling for a bookstore overseer somewhere north of Kensington in West London.

Not surprising that the Roger Mitchell oeuvre inspires up to this day filmmakers wannabes, and guess what, the Filipino director crafted one with Anna Scott and Will Thacker in his subconscious.

Quantum Films, MJM Productions and Star Cinema combined their resources to get this thing rolling with actos Jericho Rosales and Jessy Mendiola on board.

Orange is the new black
Jessy Mendiola plays the titular role in the MMFF 2018 entry, ‘The Girl in the Orange Dress.’

Mendiola plays the mysterious girl in the orange girl when denizens of the social media caught her on camera with Rosales.

Do you know that the name of the character Mendiola plays in the film is Anna? That’s it, and if doesn’t give you a clue of where it comes from, you have to review your film history from the 1990s, probably.

Jericho, meanwhile, is Rye, a showbiz superstar and a certified girl magnet. This is some sort of characters switch, while Anna in Notting Hill is the Hollywood celebrity, to make this film its “original’” hint.

Like Anna in Mitchell’s mushy romance, Rye is also the object of many girls fantasy, including Anna’s friends in The Girl in the Orange Dress. Anna is a happy go-lucky-girl who always throws caution to the wind.

And like Will and Anna, Rye and Anna meet and they also end up in bed, turning everything upside down. That encounter adds color to their lives. Their picture together goes viral and becomes a hot topic on television while the public remains clueless about the girl in the orange dress.

It’s Mendiola’s comeback to the big screen and considers the work a big help in regaining her self-worth and confidence after months of evading the public for making some terrible slip-ups, especially with fans of other female stars that have been associated with her current off-screen beau Luis Manzano. And he, like a true and gallant knight in shining armor, professes his full support. Let’s see how Mendiola stands up to the role that many observers say would have been played rather convincingly by other actors, like Anne Curtis.

For Jericho Rosales, the role of showbiz superstar is a walk in the park. He is it, and perhaps as he himself said just added some nuances so as not to reveal his off-screen persona too much.

This is Mendiola’s first film as an entry to the annual MMFF. She is nervous but excited to do her first daring role and she is doubly excited to the challenges, more so because she has Rosales for a leading man.

One of the highlights of the movie is Rye and Anna’s tango dance. Manzano, Derek Ramsay and Jennylyn Mercado make special appearances in support of Atty. Joji Alonso. The actor have appeared in some of Quantum Films more important films in the past.

The film also stars Sheena Halili, Hannah Ledesma, Ria Atayde, Nico Antonio, Cai Cortez, Via Antonio, Juan Miguel Severo, among many.
