Where the stars are on Independence Day

Independence Day is traditionally a political celebration in many countries, including the Philippines.

Yet, the people in the local entertainment industry has become regular features in many celebrations especially after the country’s population regained democracy after years of martial rule.

Overseas, GMA Pinoy TV featured the stars of GMA Network in the 119th Philippine Independence Day celebrations (PIDC) across the world as GMA’s flagship international channel continues to fulfill its commitment of bringing Filipinos closer to home.

After a successful “Pista sa Nayon: Philippine Independence Day in Vallejo, California” held on June 3 at the Vallejo Waterfront in Mare Island Way, Vallejo, California, the Dingdong Dantes and Marian Rivera drove to Carson City, California on June 10 for another celebration organized by the Philippine Independence Day Foundation at the Veterans Park.

AiAi delas Alas

On June 10 and 11, Aiai de las Alas and Encantadia heartthrob Ruru Madrid topbilled the 2017 Tokyo Summer Festival, organized by the Luminaries Joint Group, at the Ueno Park in Tokyo, Japan. Madrid graced the show on June 10 while De las Alas performed on June 11.

GMA Pinoy TV made its presence felt in Europe as the exclusive media sponsor of the Philippine Independence Day Association’s PIDC event at the Ergife Palace Hotel-OLIMPIA Via Aurelia, Roma on June 11; Filipino Anglo Club Manchester’s “Barrio Fiesta Manchester” on June 25; and the Birmingham Filipino-British Community Volunteers’ “Birmingham-Sandwells-West Midlands Fiesta Celebrations” at the Lightwoods Park, Bearwood, West Midlands on July 8 to 9.

Meanwhile, the celebration continue in Canada as Jennylyn Mercado and Boobay lead the biggest indoor Filipino fiesta in Ontario, “Pinoy Fiesta and Tradeshow sa Toronto” on June 24 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. The whole-day festivities, organized by the Philippine Canadian Charitable Foundation (PCCF), will showcase various performances that promote Filipino culture.

Halfway across the globe, Rocco Nacino and Betong Sumaya are perform in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for the “Philippine Independence Day in Jeddah” on June 30, which coincides with the Eid holiday. The event, led by the Kaagapay ng Bawat OFW group, also marks GMA Pinoy TV’s first participation as an exclusive media sponsor in Jeddah.

GMA Pinoy TV’s worldwide celebrations will culminate on Aug. 13 with the “Pinoy Fiesta Unang Hirit sa Tag-init” in Vancouver led by Glaiza de Castro. The event, organized by the Philippine Canadian Cultural Society, is the biggest Filipino cultural festival in British Columbia, which features various aspects of the Filipino culture and history. The Vancouver City Council, in support of the Filipino community in the region, has officially proclaimed the second Sunday of August as “Filipino Fiesta Day”.
