The time has come for the rise of the empowered woman. Newly crowned Miss Earth 2015 Angelia Gabrena Ong carried the Philippine flag to the world stage in a showcase of class and elegance on Dec. 5 at Vienna, Austria, and beat a total of 85 international delegates.

In this interview, global outdoor brand Merrell sits with Miss Earth 2015, Angelia Ong, and gets to know the wearer of the crown.

Congratulations to ‘Pretty Strong’ Angelia Ong for being crowned as Miss Earth 2015! We are excited to witness all the changes that you will bring to our Mother Earth.

Strength in trials

Living up to the adventurous heritage of Merrell, the Pretty Strong campaign draws and celebrates women who are bold, good natured, confident, and independent. Just like Ong, one can be Pretty Strong with their hearts on their sleeves and Merrell on their feet.

“She’s a confident woman who doesn’t see failures as failures but, rather, sees it as a challenge for a better version of herself. I think that is what a pretty strong woman is,” she describes.

When asked about a striking experience when she felt Pretty Strong, Ong, who multi-tasked as a working-student back in her college days, shares, “When I was able to earn and actually pay for my own bills, my tuition, it was really empowering.”

Advocacies, beliefs, and insights

“We will because we can,” she claims. This is the same statement of conviction she said when she competed at the recent Miss Earth 2015. In this case, she was talking about the restoration of the Philippines. “I believe, especially in Manila, it’s already cosmopolitan, so it takes a lot of effort and responsibility to be able to restore things like the culture, the history, the nature, so it’s a struggle but it’s possible, it’s feasible and we can do it,” she explains.

When asked about an advocacy that she supports, she shares, “I think it’s very timely to really support how we can educate people to minimize carbon footprints.”

She also believes in reforestation, explaining that through reforestation and tree planting, we are able to balance our atmosphere and minimize global warming.

Active and adventurous

In her free time, Ong shares wanting to explore the beach and to travel around the country.

“…if I have, like, two or three days break, I definitely want to go to the beach and experience a lot of things like — just a few months ago I tried surfing and it was awesome. Second try, I was able to stand up… and just last holiday, I actually went to El Nido Palawan and went camping without electricity and without fresh water. It was just, it was really an adventure with a tent, eating on the sand, sleeping on the sand. It was really awesome,” she narrates.

Miss Earth 2015, Angelia looking ‘Pretty Strong’ in the Merrell Bare Access Arc 4. Ong loves to travel and says Merrell is “it’s awesome ‘cause it’s very lightweight… and the designs are also cute. I love it!”

Ong sports a Merrell Bare Access Arc 4 and shares that her pair is “awesome because it’s very lightweight”.  Her Bare Access Arc 4 also gives a full-foot connection, added cushioning, and hyper responsive insole that are perfect not just for running but also for going over daily errands.
