Selection panel shortlists 7 bets for chief justice

The Judicial and Bar Council has shortlisted seven candidates for the Supreme Court seat vacated by Associate Justice Teresita Leonardo-de Castro when she was appointed chief justice.

Court of Appeals justices Japar Dimaampao, Manuel Barrios, Ramon Garcia, Edgardo delos Santos, Apolinario Bruselas, Amy Javier and Rosmari Carandang landed in the shortlist, Justice Secretary and JBC ex-officio member Menardo Guevarra said Friday.

The JBC is composed of Acting Chief Justice Antonio Carpio, Guevarra, Senator Richard Gordon, retired Supreme Court Justice Jose Mendoza, Integrated Bar of the Philippines representative Milagros Fernan-Cayosa and retired judge Toribio Ilao Jr.

President Rodrigo Duterte, the appointing authority, must choose from the list prepared by the JBC for every vacancy.

De Castro left the post of associate justice that she held for more than 10 years when Duterte named her chief justice to replace Maria Lourdes Sereno who was ousted in August.

She retired from the high court last month.
