A week after typhoon “Ompong” pounded Northern Luzon, another low pressure area is brewing to become a tropical cyclone, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said on Thursday.

Weather forecaster Gener Quitlong said the LPA was spotted at 2,300 kilometers east of Mindanao “or outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility” is forecast to develop into another typhoon by Friday evening or Saturday morning.

It if enters the PAR, the tropical cyclone would be named “Paeng,” he said.

“Based on our [weather] satellite data, it [“Paeng”] would not make landfall,” he said, adding “but it would come closer to Batanes.”

“So far, we do not expect it [brewing tropical cyclone to affect the southwest monsoon,” he said.

“Still, we do not rule out the possibility to have strong rains,” he added.

Quitlong, however, said the cyclone could strengthen into a storm by Sunday or Monday.

“Based on our data,” the coming typhoon would not be that strong as that of “Ompong” that triggered landslides and floods, and wreaked havoc on the lives and properties of the people in Luzon, particularly in Northern Luzon.
