Leonilo Doloricon, among Filipino contemporary artists, starts a nine-day solo exhibit at Saint Petersburg in Russia tomorrow, with artworks demonstrating his views on what 2, 04 Gallery, where his artworks are, describes as “undying news.”

In a press statement obtained by the Manila Standard from the Gallery, the 61-year-old Doloricon, who was born in Surigao del Sur, and who served as dean of the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts, is in a project which “aims to highlight the most complex problems the society encounters and motivate the audience to form their own critical view.”

The Gallery added: “The issue pose (sic) no definite answers but infinite questions on how people in their multitude will take part in their final resolution.”

Saint Petersburg, on the Nava River at the head of the Gulf of Finland, is an important port on the Baltic Sea and has a status of a Russian federal city.

The multi-awarded visual artist, who works mainly with printmaking, is known as among the leading exponents of social realism in the Philippines.

His works have been presented at solo and group exhibitions at home and abroad and marked by name awards.

According to the Gallery, Doloricon “applies the language and expression potential of printed graphics to highlight social problems and critical issues in the society—both inside of his country and worldwide.”

It added: “Using a realist approach and simple tools the artist creates strong, controversial and critical images with a meaning that is both obvious and deep.

“Besides his artistic work (he) has a broad experience of working in educational and social organizations. Since 2011, he holds the General Secretary position at the cultural organization “Concerned Artists of the Philippines.”
