SENATOR Vicente Sotto III, the current majority leader of the 24-member body, said Saturday members of the upper chamber’s majority would decide when he would take the top post on Monday.

The 69-year-old Sotto said the majority, including him, would meet with Senate President Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III before deciding if he should take over the Senate leadership.

“The majority will decide when on Monday after we meet together with Koko,” Sotto said, replying to  a question.

The former TV host, who was once vice mayor of Quezon City, was  in the Senate for two terms from 1992 to 2004. In 2010, he was reelected.

Pimentel himself on Thursday belied reports that Sotto would take over the top Senate post on Monday.

“Nothing will happen on Monday,” Pimentel said, when asked about the leadership change amid a report that 14 senators have signed a resolution installing Sotto as the new Senate President.

The 54-year-old Pimentel had said that he would not cling on to the Senate presidency if his colleagues wanted him replaced.

“We should not be too attached to the position,” he said.

Pimentel III, son of former Senate President Aquilino Pimentel Jr., is the 28th and current leader of the Senate and is also the current president of the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan.

Pimentel, who will seek a reelection, admitted he would be busy preparing the PDP-Laban for the 2019 midterm national elections.
