The Commission on Elections is all set for the May 14 barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections and will use the already-printed official ballots for the polls’ original Oct. 23, 2017 schedule to save public funds and government resources.

The Comelec declined to comment on another postponement measure in Congress, which seeks to move the local elections for the third time to Oct. 2, 2018.

In a statement, Comelec spokesman James Jimenez said that under Resolution No. 10248, voters in the National Capital Region, Luzon and Visayas Regions will be using the 59,578,346 official ballots that were printed from Aug. 9, 2017 to Sept. 30, 2017.

The poll body, however, said it will print an additional 18 million ballots for the new registrants and for Mindanao voters.

“The bulk of preparation is in the printing of ballots for the additional registrants during the November 2017 registration,” Jimenez said.

To avoid confusion, ballots for NCR, Luzon and Visayas will bear Oct. 23, 2017 as the date of the elections, while those for Mindanao would bear May 14, 2018 as the date of the elections.

Jimenez said the printing of additional ballots started in February and is expected to end this month.

Comelec noted 843,588 new voter applicants, but the Election Registration Boards are yet to verify, certify and seal the List of Voters, he added.
