San Miguel Corp. president and COO Ramon S. Ang congratulated the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System on its 140th anniversary and expressed SMC’s optimism for more partnerships with MWSS.

Luzon Clean Water Development Corp., a consortium of San Miguel Holdings and K-Water Resources Corp. is the third MWSS concessionaire since water agency’s privatization in 1997. Its service area is known as the North Zone with Maynilad serving the West Zone and Manila Water the East Zone.

Ongoing is one of the water legacy projects, Bulacan Bulk Water Supply Project being undertaken by Luzon Clean Water Development Corp.

“We are proud to be working with you on the Bulacan Bulk Water project  because this will finally provide millions of residents from 24 cities and municipalities in Bulacan access to fresh, potable surface water while balancing the competing needs of a growing population, industry, agriculture, and the environment in the province,” Ang said in an official message to MWSS published in the MWSS @ 140 commemorative book.

He added, “We have already achieved significant progress in driving down our operational water use across our business and enabling access to safe water for millions of Bulakeños. We are committed to doing so much more.”

The BBWSP aims to provide treated bulk water to Bulacan’s Water Service Providers   to assist in their efforts to meet the current water demand, expand service area coverage and increase the number of households served. It was shortlisted for the 2017 Global Water Awards for Water Deal of the Year.

SMC’s Head of Operations Edgar Doña said that the construction of the BBWSP is ahead of schedule. “Stage 1 is targeted for completion on October 2018 and Stage 2 on April 2019 but we are thankful that we are ahead of our proposed time.”

SMC is pushing for water stewardship consistent with the mission and vision of MWSS. It is also helping solve water challenges and finding ways to harness its “organization’s unique characteristics to preserve this precious public resource.”

According to Ang, the importance of water to sustainable development cannot be overemphasized, and the relentless commitment of MWSS to pursue a water-secure metropolis inspires SMC to set even bigger goals for water efficiency.

San Miguel Corp. also has an unsolicited proposal for the Laiban Dam Project, a project identified by MWSS for water security. It is awaiting government action on its proposal.

Among the major events in the MWSS 140th anniversary celebration include  a presentation by MWSS of its water security programs; unveiling of a scale model of the masterplan for the Balara complex done by Architect Felino Palafox; presentation of the flagship projects of MWSS concessionaires Manila Water, Maynilad and Bulacan Clean Water Development Corpo.; inauguration of the new MWSS multi-purpose gymnasium and cafeteria; and the formal launch of the MWSS coffee table book titled: “From Carriedo to Balara: Celebrating 140 Years of MWSS and Enduring Water Security.
