CANADA’S Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has not asked world leaders why they are fighting President Rodrigo Duterte instead of focusing on the “world threat” posed by North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, the Canadian Embassy in Manila said.

Describing the purported attribution as “fake,” the Canadian Embassy on Monday slammed it and what it called a fake news website which “wrongly attributed” the quote to Trudeau.

“The website, aljazeeranews-tv.com wrongly attributed a quote to Canada’s Prime Minister in his address to the United Nations General Assembly,” the Candian Embassy in Manila said.

It urged the public to always refer to the Prime Minister’s official website for statements and speeches.

In a fake website,  claiming to be of Aljazeera News, Trudeau allegedly expressed soft stance on Duterte’s government and his war on drugs and urged world leaders to offer advisory and technical assistance to the Southeast Asian nation instead of engaging in unnecessary criticism.

“Why is the world fighting the Philippine government under President Duterte instead of focusing on the real threat from North Korea’s Kim from his nuclear program?” the fake news website wrote, claiming Trudeau’s statement made in last week’s United Nations General Assembly.

This news emerged at the same time when some opinion writers quoted the fake news website which went viral among pro-Duterte supporters. They said the fake news cited United States ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley as saying critics should give Duterte a “space to run his nation.” Sara D. Fabunan

But the US Embassy in Manila, through press attaché Molly Koscina, clarified Haley did not make such remarks.

“There has been reporting recently, incorrectly quoting a speech that was never made,” Koscina said.

Haley’s remarks, she said, are available on the US Mission to the UN website for reference.
