Martial law extension approved

Sixteen senators (16) and two hundred forty five (245) members of the House of Representatives voted to approve the martial law extension in Mindanao until December 31, 2017.

This is following the formal request of President Rodrigo Duterte.

Meanwhile, 4 senators and 14 representatives voted against the extension.

The figures come from the voting during the special joint session in the Batasang Pambansa in Quezon City.

The proceeding began at 9 am on Saturday.

Voting was conducted at about 4 pm.

Lawmakers proceeded to explain their votes until past 5 pm and the session was adjourned shortly after this.

In sum, 261 lawmakers voted in favor of martial law extension while 18 were opposed.

261 represents 83 percent of the all 314 lawmakers in the country.
