THE Filipinos’ trust in China dipped further by 13 points in the latest Social Weather Stations survey, and despite President Rodrigo Duterte’s efforts to seek better ties with Beijing.

The First Quarter 2017 SWS survey, conducted among 1,200 respondents and released on Thursday, showed that 34 percent of those polled had “much trust” in China while 38 percent expressed “little trust” in the Asian superpower.

Net trust in China was at a neutral -4, a 13-point decline from the neutral +9 recorded in December 2016.

Some 35 percent of those polled expressed “much trust” while 29 percent showed “little trust” with Russia, another superpower being wooed by President Duterte.

Net trust in the Russian Federation fell by 3 points to a neutral +6 from a record-high neutral +9 in the last quarter.

Despite Duterte’s continued tirades, 70 percent of those polled had “much trust” in the US while 17 percent were “undecided” and 13 percent had “little trust” in the US.

The United States received its lowest net trust rating since its +35 in March 2010–and even while remaining in the “very good” category at +56 from +72, +66 and +59 in June, September and December last year.

Australia and Japan maintained “good” trust ratings with Filipinos, with Japan posting a +42 net satisfaction rating, SWS said.

France and North Korea were included in the poll, which showed the former having a net trust of +18 in March (from -1 in October 2000) and the latter, a net trust of -5 (from -7 in December 2014).

The latest survey, conducted from March 25 to 28, had sampling error margins of ±3 percent for the national percentages.
