Govt gives up Bulacan house units for Kadamay

PROTESTERS who forcibly took over idle housing projects intended for the military and other uniformed personnel in Pandi, Bulacan, will get to keep the units they occupied after President Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday said the government would give them up.

Speaking to soldiers during the 120th anniversary of the Philippine Army, Duterte told the troops to just give the housing project to members of the militant urban poor workers’ group, Kalipunan ng Damayang Mahihirap (Kadamay).

“This ruckus in Bulacan, it’s like our poor fellow Filipinos grabbed the housing units. I will look into the matter seriously. And I will ask you soldiers and the policemen to just let go of the units and give them up to the poor,” he said in Filipino.

Duterte said that he was forced to resolve the issue to avoid more confrontations between the government and the urban poor group.

“I don’t want to push the issue further because it would somehow result in flogging and to think, our sin is that we’re all poor.

“To the Kadamay, do not touch my soldiers and police. If you’ll be doing that, I’ll be forced to remove you from there. Do not create trouble and avoid chaos. We will try to solve what ails this country,” he said.

President Rodrigo Duterte

Duterte then vowed to give soldiers who were beneficiaries of the housing projects in Pandi better housing developments to replace those taken from them.

“I’m asking you, if it’s possible, do not be offended and take it with an open mind. As President, I am asking you, let us not wage a fight against our own people. They’re just poor, let’s just understand them,” the President said.

“I’ll build another housing project for you soonest and I intend to complete it by December,” he added.

Duterte, who earlier accused illegal settlers of placing the government in an embarrassing position, said that he will not tolerate squatters who illegally occupied low-cost housing projects at Pandi, Bulacan.

At least 5,000 families affiliated with Kadamay occupied six housing projects in Pandi, Bulacan since March 8. These units were supposedly built for personnel of the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police and for displaced squatters in Metro Manila.
