SOME 1,400 mayors were summoned to a meeting with President Rodrigo Duterte in Malacañang on Jan.18, Wednesday, after he warned those who were involved in the illegal drugs trade to resign or die.

A senior Cabinet official who asked not to be named told the Manila Standard in a text message that the country’s mayors will be invited to the Palace for a “meeting.”

“Yes, all of them,” the official said.

Another source said the President might pay particular attention to some mayors he has often referred to in his speeches.

“The meeting is concerned about narco-politicians. They were invited,” the source said.

On Monday, the President said that he plans to confront mayors who are on his final list of suspected drug personalities, and warn them to resign and abandon their drug trade, or face death.

“I will call the mayors, I will lock them in so it’s just us. I will really tell them, ‘The list I gave you is this thick. Look for your name there, mayor. If your name is there, son of a bitch, you have a problem. I will really kill you,” he warned.

“Either you resign or make a clean break of everything, come up with clean nose and we’ll talk,” he added.

If he will be remembered as a murderer, so be it, he added.

“I might go down [in] history as the butcher. It’s up to you,” the President said.

Duterte earlier admitted that he does not have any evidence to prosecute politicians he tagged as being involved in the illegal drug trade.

Duterte said the country is already a narco-state, but he cannot just leave the problem alone.

In various speeches, Duterte said that congressmen, governors, mayors, and barangay captains are included in his final narco-list, which is being validated.
