IFUGAO Gov. Dennis Habawel of the Nationalista Party has declared his full support for United Nationalist Alliance standard bearer Jejomar Binay, fortifying Binay’s lead in the vote-rich “Solid North,” UNA secretary-general JV Bautista said Wednesday.

Bautista made his statement even as Malacañang on Wednesday described Binay’s camp as “insecure” after it accused Liberal Standard standard bearer Manuel Roxas II as the one who had a hand in the release of political advertisements that were against Binay     “Is Binay’s camp so insecure that they are accusing the camp of Mar Roxas [of releasing the negative ads]? Was he affected  by the ad of Mar that’s why he [Binay] is accusing him [Roxas]?” presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda said in a text message to reporters.

Habawel said Binay was the most qualified to respond to various local concerns, including the problems on poverty, hunger, education and health care for ordinary citizens.

“It was not difficult for me to make the decision to help Vice President Binay capture Malacañang because he is one of our own. He will be the first president, God willing, who will come from the ranks of the indigenous People’s group,” Habawel said.

He described Binay as the only presidential candidate that listens to the concerns of ordinary citizens.

“Additionally, this is also our way of expressing our deepest gratitude to the Binay family as his grandmother served for a long time as a public school teacher in a far-flung barangay called Magulon in Mayoyao town,” Habawel said.

Bautista said the groundswell of support for the presidential bid of Binay continued to gain momentum as another governor from the Cordillera Autonomous Region was expected to join UNA in the next few days.

“Clearly, there is now a snowballing trend from the ranks of incumbent local officials that is developing into a surge of support for Binay,” Bautista said.

Cicero Lumauig, UNA provincial coordinator for Ifugao, said eight out of 11 incumbent mayors were with Habawel.

UNA likewise confirmed that in the Municipality of Lagawe, the contenders incumbent Vice Mayor Habawel and Gadfrey Duminong of UNA were both supporting Binay, and that mayoralty candidate Eladio Bang-ud was supporting Binay in Asipulo town.

“Alfonso Lista Mayor Arsenio Humiding, of the CPLA, is also being adopted by UNA and because of this development Binay is assured of an overwhelming victory in Ifugao province,” Lumauig said.
