A legislator on Saturday asked fellow congressmen to speed up the passage of the bill strengthening the protection of the Chocolate Hills in Bohol province by declaring it as national treasure.

Rep. Erico Aristotle Aumentado of Bohol said House Bill No. 2111 also protects the national heritage and geological monuments.

“Former President Fidel Ramos declared the Chocolate Hills as national geological monuments because of their exceptional characteristics, scientific importance, uniqueness, relevance to Philippine history and heritage as well as culture and development, their importance in the tourism industry as major tourist attraction in the country, and high scenic value per the National Committee on Geological Sciences, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, and the Department of Tourism,” Aumentado said.

Aumentado said the Chocolate Hills, according to a German scientist’s study, were created over three million years ago —when Bohol was under seawater—by undersea currents and tidal action, which explains the perfect cone of some of the hills and the haycock formation of others.

The proposed “Chocolate Hills Protection Act” declares it the policy of the State to protect and preserve the Chocolate Hills located in 32 barangays in the municipalities of Carmen, Batuan and Sagbayan in Bohol.
