Trillanes, Sabio ask DOJ to junk cases

Former Senator Antonio Trillanes IV and lawyer Jude Sabio on Tuesday asked the Department of Justice to junk the complaint for kidnapping and serious illegal detention filed against them by a Davao-based businesswoman.

Trillanes, Sabio and Jesuit priest Albert Alejo have been before the DOJ for kidnapping and serious illegal detention based on the allegations made by businesswoman Guillermina Barrido, who claimed that she was detained in two convents in December 2016 to force her to sign a “ready-made” affidavit against President Rodrigo Duterte.

Barrido also alleged that the former senator had attempted to bribe her to testify against the President.

In his counter-affidavit filed with the DOJ, Trillanes recalled that Catholic church workers and "Filipino online personalities" had approached him to consider Barrido as a whistleblower or witness but he did not personally meet or speak with the businesswoman.

Nonetheless, the former senator admitted that he authorized consultants to interview Barrido in November 2016 and had his office investigate the businesswoman's claims, but they dropped her from consideration in the same month.

Trillanes said they found Barrido’s claims "lack depth and/or material details and are full of gaps and loopholes," and considered as a "red flag" when she asked for money to relocate her family because of "threats" against them.
