Employees of fintech firms undergo random drug testing

Executives and employees of Filipino-owned private firms engaged in financial technology have voluntarily submitted themselves to a drug testing procedure in compliance with an order of the Department of Labor and Employment to ensure drug-free workplaces.

Officers and employees of First Tree Ventures, Moneybees Forex Corp., and Paylance Inc. underwent voluntary drug testing procedures recently.

Under DOLE’s Department Order No. 53-03, employers must require their officials and employees to undergo random drug testing in accordance with the company’s work rules and regulations for purposes of reducing risks in the workplace.

Under the said order, employers shall be responsible for increasing awareness and education of their officers and employees on the adverse effects of dangerous drugs as well as for monitoring employees susceptible to drug abuse.

The drug testing procedure at said companies was initiated by retired Col. Rodrigo Bonifacio, chairman of the People’s Volunteer Against Illegal Drugs, a non-government organization recognized and accredited by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency.

Bonifacio said the campaign was done in two approaches—the surprise drug testing procedure of all employees led by First Tree's chairman of the board Marieta Cruz and Moneybees and Paylance president Jay Ricky Villarante.

PVAID director Virgilio Garcia and PVAID-Preventive Education and Values Formation head Dr. Rainier Umali provided a screen test and confirmatory examination to all participants during the drug testing.

“The program is part of their commitment to the government in promoting the Philippine Anti-Illegal Drugs Strategy and its three pronged approaches particularly the drug demand reduction through preventive education and values formation,” Bonifacio said.

“Our NGO will continue to promote the National Anti Drug Campaign to encourage the private sector's cooperation and support for more vigorous and concerted effort in saving the lives of every Filipino family away from the drug menace,” he added.
