With only 33 days remaining before the 2019 midterm elections, the Commission on Elections said Monday that it is 95 percent ready for the May 13 elections as more than 59 million election ballots or 93 percent of the more than 61 million ballots  have been printed out.

Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez said more than 61 million ballots will be used in the May 13 exercise while 1.8 million will be for overseas voting.

According to the Comelec, there are 61,843,750 registered voters for the upcoming elections.

Jimenez said the Comelec is ahead of its completion target for the printing of ballots, saying that the remaining ballots that still need to be printed are for the National Capital Region.

The printing of the remaining 4,363,495 is expected to be completed within the week, Jimenez said.

Meanwhile, the Comelec said that the ongoing election campaign nationwide is normally peaceful with minimal reports of election-related violence.

Jimenez said the Comelec is preparing to file charges against a local candidate for slapping a Comelec officer who was conducting “Operation Baklas” in Tarlac province.

According to the Comelec, election officer Teddy Mariano was slapped in the face by Marty Toralba, a candidate for board member while conducting   “Operation Baklas” of illegal campaign posters.

Comelec commissioner Rowena Guanzon wants Toralba, a lawyer, disbarred.

The Comelec Employees’ Union, meantime, strongly condemned the assault on Mariano who they said was merely performing his duty.

“We call on the Comelec to make sure that candidate Toralba be made accountable for this barefaced act of aggression against an election worker who is merely doing his duty of enforcing campaign rules in his jurisdiction,” the group said in a statement.
