In a bid to prevent cybersecurity attacks, the Department of Information and Communications Technology on Tuesday urged the telecommunications companies to adopt the best practices of cyber hygiene not only within their internal network but also among their subscribers.

At a news conference in Quezon City, Assistant Secretary Allan Cabanlong of the DICT’s Cybersecurity and Enabling Technologies said: “telcos play a big role in information structure.”

He also called on Mislatel Consortium of Davao-based businessman Dennis Uy, a new major telecom player, to follow the guidelines of the DiCT and ensure that there would be no data infiltration to happen.

Since the telco industry is always awash with the country’s critical information, it must assure that information stealing through malware attack is prevented, he said.

Meanwhile, Senator Grace Poe, chairman of the Senate public services committee, is set to check on the compliance of the winning bidder after the 90-day review process.p when she resumes the hearing on the third telco tomorrow, Jan. 24.

The committee’s third public hearing was scheduled at 10 a.m. at the Senate Session Hall.

“We hope that this third telco lives up to its promise to improve the telco services in the country because there will be more competition in the industry, said Poe.

“We really want the third telco to be successful but we also want to erase doubts with regards ti the security of our country,” she said.

Last November, the government chose Mislatel Consortium composed of Davao-based businessman Dennis A. Uy’s Udenna Corp. and Chelsea Logistics and Chinese state-owned China Telecommunications Corp.
