The Sandiganbayan on Friday chided House of Representatives’ Majority Leader Rolando Andaya Jr. for his ‘inappropriate’ comments on the court’s handling of a case filed against him by the Ombudsman.

The case against Andaya and several others arose from alleged irregularities in the use of the Malampaya funds amounting to almost P1 billion.

“You mentioned your arraignment being ‘nice timing’ today,” Presiding Justice Amparo Cabotaje-Tang said on Friday.

Tang reacted to Andaya’s statement on television Thursday that his arraignment on the graft case filed against him had a “nice timing… just when all of these were coming out.”

The House committee on rules, chaired by Andaya is in the midst of investigating the alleged irregularities in the preparation of the proposed national government budget for 2019.

Andaya apologized in open court, promising to be more careful with his statements in the future.

“I apologize if it sent the wrong message. It won’t happen again and I will be more careful,” Andaya said.

Tang accepted Andaya’s apology.

“In resolving cases, the court will never be swayed by external factors like politics. In fact, the court is apolitical. You may disagree with our resolutions, but you have remedies. Please avail of that. Do not try to attribute anything to the court if you are not satisfied,” Tang said.
