Former Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano, who is seeking to return to Congress, on Thursday said the disqualification case filed against him and his wife incumbent Taguig City Mayor Laarni Cayetano has no legal basis and branded it as purely political harassment.

The former secretary is running to represent the first district (Taguig-Pateros) in the May 2019 midterm elections and is gunning to become the speaker of the House of Representatives while his wife Laarni, who is on her third and last term as mayor, is also going after a House seat to represent the second district (Taguig).

But Leonides Buac Jr. questioned their candidacies and filed a petition with the Commission on Elections, saying the spouses absurdly represent that they habitually reside in two different localities.

“A married couple can only maintain one legal residence at any given time, Buac said in his petition.
