Lawmakers on Saturday hailed the appointment of Philippine Ambassador to the United Nations Teodoro Locsin as the next secretary of Foreign Affairs.

Reps. Feliciano Belmonte, Jr. of Quezon City, Rodolfo Albano III of Isabela, Ben Evardone of Eastern Samar, and Robert Ace Barbers of Surigao del Norte, said Locsin is fit for the job given his track record as a lawyer, public servant and newspaperman.

Locsin will replace Alan Peter Cayetano, who is running for congressman of Taguig. He will reportedly aim for the Speakership upon the order of President Rodrigo Duterte.

“Teddy Boy’s stint as our UN Ambassador, member of Congress, media man of [the late President Corazon Aquino] and other experiences certainly makes him a good choice. Aside from his experiences, he is articulate… a fighter. I endorse [the] choice,” Belmonte, former Speaker, said.

Also expressing support for Locsin, Albano said: He [Locsin] is the best man for the job.”

“He has the vision and the capability to push the foregn policy of the Duterte administration,” Albano said.

Evardone, chairman of the House Committee on Public Information, shared the view of Belmonte and Albano.

“He is very competent and high capable in handling diplomatic affairs,” said Evardone, a former journalist.

Barbers, chairman of the House Committee on Dangerous Drugs, said Locsin’s appointment was a “good choice.” “He is intelligent and brilliant; and witty, too…. I am sure he will charm his counterparts.”

President Duterte said Friday he has chosen Locsin to replace Cayetano as Foreign Affairs secretary.

The President made the announcement during a press conference in Davao City upon his arrival from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Leaders’ Gathering in Bali, Indonesia.
