Ilocos Norte Gov. Imee Marcos will spearhead the Nacionalista Party senatorial slate in the coming 2019 local elections and will ally with Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte’s Hugpong ng Pagbabago.

During the Samahang Plaridel Kapihan forum at the Manila Hotel, Marcos said that President Rodrigo Duterte’s daughter will endorse at least eight possible senatorial candidates from the NP, NPC and PDP-Laban this coming October.

Marcos, who doubts the credibility of Smartmatic, is hoping that the Commission on Elections would closely monitor the conduct of the local elections to avoid any repeat of cheating similar to what happened to his brother, former senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., who she claimed was leading by as many as 90,000 votes but was wiped out when the votes from Antique and Iloilo City were tallied and lost the vice presidential race to Liberal Party’s Leni Robredo.

She said the Comelec should cancel Smartmatic’s contract because of anomalous ownership structure, which has gone unnoticed since the controversial firm bagged in 2010 the contract to run automated elections in the Philippines.

However, Marcos expressed hopes that Smartmatic would be fair enough and respect the decision of the people.

If elected, Marcos, who continue to enjoy widespread support in Northern Luzon, their bailiwick, said she would revive his father’s “Green Revolution”   to provide cheap agricultural products by planting vegetables in all available lots, even in the metropolis.

Marcos admitted that there are many challenges facing the agricultural sector.

“We still have failures in irrigation and a lack of research in hybrid rice. The inability to provide farmers more inputs give our farmers problems to make their agricultural production grow,”   she said.

But Marcos said she remains optimistic that poverty will be defeated once the problems with agriculture are addressed.
