Building contractor suspended over Makati accident

The Makati City government on Friday sanctioned the building installation provider of Shang Salcedo Place condominium after a gondola engine fell from the 67-story structure, hitting a passenger jeep that resulted in the injury of four persons.

The incident happened at the corner of Sen. Gil Puyat Avenue (formerly Buendia Avenue) and Tordesillas Street in Salcedo Village around 9:20 a.m.

City Building Office-Enforcement Division officer-in-charge engineer Julio Cepeda immediately ordered a work stoppage against Vonotec Inc., a construction company that provide mechanical and installation works at the condominium, following the incident.

Cepeda said the firm made an illegal mechanical installation and operation at the building and violated the National Building Code. He also asked the firm’s management or representatives to appear to his office within three days to hear their side on the matter.

The incident resulted into heavy traffic within the area.

Meanwhile, Romulo Salgado Jr., officer-in-charge of the city’s Information and Community Relations Department, identified the victims of the accident as Florito Torevillas, 47; Rochelle Balayas, 31; Aljun Gorgonio, 25 and Antonio Arcilla, 47, who were rushed to the Makati Medical Center due to head and body injuries.

He said the victims were passengers of the Buendia-Guadalupe bound jeepney (DFY-828) owned by Rolando Matuga of Pasay City.

The city government and the Makati City police are investigating the incident.

Two years ago, two people were also seriously injured in Makati after a tower crane at the construction site suffered a structural failure and collapsed.

The accident happened at the corner of H.V. dela Costa Street and Tordesillas Street in the same village, also damaged some vehicles and caused the heavy traffic and power interruption in the area.
