President Rodrigo Duterte is persuading his close and trusted aide, Special Assistant to the President Christopher “Bong” Go to run for senator in the 2019 midterm elections, according to Malacañang spokesman Harry Roque.
In a press briefing Monday in Malacañang, the presidential spokesperson said President Duterte raised the idea of Go running as a senator in the 2019 elections.
“I understand the President has broached it to SAP Go and it is something that they are discussing between the two of them,” Roque said.
While Duterte’s right hand man repeatedly announced that he would not run, Go told reporters in an ambush interview that it would be up to the President.
“The position of SAP Go is he will heed whatever the President wishes him to do. He will be dependent on the President,” he said.
“He [Go] has said that personally he would not run, but if the President asks him to, he will,” Roque said.
House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez earlier said he will persuade Go as PDP-Laban needs to have a Mindanaoan senatorial candidate in its lineup.
As this developed, Davao City Mayor Duterte vowed to support Go once he decides to join the senatorial race in the 2019 national election.
Speaking to the media, Mayor Duterte said she will be more than willing to support Go especially that he contributed a lot of things to the President.
“Of course. We will be so proud if there will be a senator from Davao City.”
Mayor Duterte said that Go is qualified for a public post especially that he already have a background in politics.
“He has been with the President (Rodrigo Duterte) since the 1990s so he has a deep experience in the government service,” Mayor Duterte said.
The Davao City mayor had said that she will be willing to support those who helped his father’s administration if they decide to run for senate.
She previously endorsed Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Assistant Secretary Margaux “Mocha” Uson, a well-known supporter of her father.
