Creation of body to probe road mishaps pushed

Senator Grace Poe has filed a bill seeking the creation of a National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

This body will investigate accidents that occur along the road, focusing on how it happened and determine the cause of the mishap.

Her study shows about three hundred (300) road accidents happen everyday across the country.

This means 12 mishaps occur every hour.

She says, in 2016, the number of road accidents reached a total of 109,322.

Poe notes agencies like the Land Transportation Office (LTO), Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) and the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) are looking into conditions of vehicles and traffic congestion but no government body is focused on investigations of accidents.

Poe has just delivered the sponsorship speech for this proposal stated in Senate Bill Number 1637.

Should it get approved, the NTSB shall be manned by a seven-member board.

The lawmaker hopes the measure will help make the transport sector safe.
