The legal team of Bayan Muna Party-list is finalizing its case against the Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion (TRAIN) Law.

They are set to question the recently enacted law before the Supreme Court.

Bayan Muna Party-list Representative Carlos Zarate claims, there was no quorum and voting that took place in the House of Representatives when the ratified version of the measure was supposed to have been approved in a session last month.

The lawmaker says, for this reason, the law passed last December 19 was legally infirm.

Meanwhile, the Department of Finance (DOF) says, workers who have annual incomes of P 250,000 and below will be exempted from paying taxes as a result of the enactment of the TRAIN law.

DOF Spokesperson Paula Alvarez says, the effect of the measure will be felt in the workers' personal income taxes this month.

The measure also raises the excise taxes for petroleum products and sweetened beverages.

But Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Secretary Ramon Lopez says, the TRAIN law has no effect on the prices of these commodities at this time.

He explains, oil companies and food stores are still selling items from their old stocks and not from new inventories.
