House panel: Sereno's lawyers can't cross-examine witnesses

The House Justice Committee has dismissed the request of Supreme Court Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno for her lawyers to be allowed to question the witnesses who will be presented in the impeachment hearing against her.

The panel led by Oriental Mindoro Representative and Committee Chairman Reynaldo Umali held a voting on the matter today.

30 members voted to junk Sereno's plea while 4 members voted to grant the request.

Sereno had earlier asked the panel to allow her lawyers to cross-examine the witnesses to be presented by her accuser, Attorney Lorenzo "Larry" Gadon.

She had also asked that her counsels be given the opportunity to object to supposedly improper questions during direct examinations.

Umali, however, said only Sereno is allowed to cross-examine the witnesses.

He explained Sereno's right to confront her accusers cannot be extended to her counsels.
