Group backs SSS bid, but seeks reforms

Labor group Alliance of Labor Unions-Trade Union Congress of the Philippines said it will support the state-run Social Security System planned increase in its members’ contributions in 2018, only if they will do away with unnecessary trips abroad, do away with excessive bonuses of its top executives, prosecute delinquent employers and improve its collection.

The SSS earlier said the proposed hike in members’ contributions would be rolled out next year, after it gets the needed amendments in its charter, in time for the implementation of the Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion Act.

A bill seeking to amend the SSS Charter, as provided in Republic Act 1161 or the Social Security Act, is currently being deliberated in the Senate. The TRAIN bill is also being discussed in the Senate.

“We expect the SSS management will consult labor groups including the ALU-TUCP on the planned increase by next year. We will only support the increase if the SSS management would be able to convince us if they have already improve its collection and have already prosecuted delinquent employers,” ALU-TUCP spokesperson Alan Tanjusay said.
