The Bureau of Customs has confiscated 31 containers of smuggled rice from Vietnam and other smuggled goods worth more than P50 million at the Manila International Container Port.

Customs Commissioner Nicanor Faeldon, who led the inspection of the containers, said the shipments were declared to be glutinous rice but were later discovered to contain regular rice from Vietnam.

He said the smuggled rice came from Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, while the fake imported goods which include footwear, bags, and apparels came from Hong Kong.

The BoC was alerted about the shipments after spurious documents were reportedly used to release the containers.

The Customs chief said they will file charges of economic sabotage against the owners of the smuggled rice.

“If smuggling of agricultural products such as rice exceeds P10 million, it is considered economic sabotage and non-bailable,” he said.
