Military declares terrorist leader Omar Maute is dead

The military has confirmed that one of the two Maute brothers leading the fight against government troops in Marawi City, is already dead.

Joint Task Force Marawi Spokesperson Lt. Col. Jo-Ar Herrera says, Omar Maute was killed two weeks ago in an encounter between soldiers and Maute terrorists in Marawi City.

Herrera adds, Omar's brother Abdullah Maute has taken over the leadership of the group.

Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff Eduardo Ano says, "mukhang patay na nga (looks like he is dead)," referring to the fate of Omar Maute.

He added, "Abdullah is still there in Marawi," along with Abu Sayyaf leader Isnilon Hapilon.

The AFP is fighting with about 120 Maute group members in the city.

Its airstrikes against Maute positions continue on Friday and many portions in Marawi City are burning as a result of relentless bombardments.
