Databases vs illegal recruitment rolled out

To avert problems  plaguing Filipinos seeking workers overseas, including falling victims to illegal recruiters, the government has prepared three databases giving crucial information on illegal recruitment and human trafficking.

These databases were included in a memorandum of understanding signed during the Anti-Illegal Recruitment summit spearheaded by the Philippine Overseas Employment Agency.

Stakeholders now have access to the National Illegal Recruitment Case Monitoring System, Online Trafficking-in-Persons Blacklist Database, and the Illegal Recruitment and TIP Priority Targets List.

Overseas Filipino workers have contributed significantly to the country’s gross domestic product, with $25.76 billion in remittances sent thru formal channels and $28.5 billion through personal remittances.

Senator Cynthia Villar earlier filed Senate Bill No. 146 seeking to create a Department of Migration and Development which will focus solely on OFW protection.

The summit was hosted by SM Prime Holdings, Inc. through its SM Global Pinoy program.

SM vice president for corporate communications Elena Bautista-Horn said the company shares in the advocacy against illegal recruitment and human trafficking.

“It is our pleasure that we are a part of this advocacy to wage an unrelenting fight against illegal recruiters and human traffickers. It is our fight, a good fight not only for us, for OFW breadwinners and their families. It is also a fight to build a brighter, shining future for our nation,” Bautista-Horn said.

“Over the years, our partnership with POEA is in keeping with worthy causes to benefit hundreds of OFWs and their families. This year, we intend to strengthen our partnership with POEA for the millions of Filipino overseas workers and those pinning their hopes for a better life by working abroad,” she added.
