Malacañang on Saturday night urged all Filipinos to fight climate change and be in solidarity with the rest of the world that observed Earth Hour 2017.

“Earth Hour 2017 is a good reminder of our commitment to fight climate change and our solidarity to the rest of the world in spreading the message that while we pursue economic development programs, we continuously aspire for sustainable, climate change-resilient living,”Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella said.

Filipinos once again switched their lights off for a full hour on Saturday night as the Philippines participated in the annual global campaign for Earth Hour.

The main event of this year’s Earth Hour Philippines, which urged the public to help “shine a light on climate change,” took place at SM by the Bay in Pasay City.

“Now everybody is aware of our largest global movement for the environment Earth Hour. We are happy because we are able to engage the youth as well,” World Wildlife Fund Philippines president Joel Palma.

Before the switch-off, an Earth Hour Camp took place which featured interactive climate adaptation and mitigation booths.

The Philippines has been championing the switch-off since 2008 and has topped global participation records from 2009 to 2012—earning it the title of Earth Hour Hero Country.

Earth Hour, which started as a symbolic lights out event in Sydney in 2007, has been engaging individuals, business and organizers in over 7,000 cities and more than 170 countries to act towards climate change.
