Blast scares Global City folk

RESIDENTS and workers at the Fort Bonifacio Global City got a scare after they heard a loud blast late Wednesday afternoon and saw policemen cordoning off the area around the area of 7th Street. Taguig City police chief Senior Superintendent Arthur Asis said the blast happened at 4:30 p.m. at the at the Two Parkade building, but when the authorities found no blast evidence when they arrived at the area, except for the strong stench of liquefied petroleum gas. “Apparently, it was not a bomb blast. People heard a loud bang and saw a manhole cover flying in the air and then they started to smell the gas, “ Asis said, stressing that there were no injuries or damage to property. But the authorities had to make sure that there was no danger from a bomb so traffic had to be diverted while bomb disposal teams with dogs scoured the area for traces of explosives. Investigators surmised that the blast could have been caused by the underground pipes of the Bonifacio Gas Corp. which exclusively distributes piped gas to households and commercial establishments inside the Global City. Representatives of Bonifacio Gas also arrived at the area, but they could not yet determine the source or cause of the blast at press time. Bonifacio Gas, a venture of the Fort Bonifacio Development Corp. and Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corp., was formed in November 1998 to build and operate an underground pipeline network that will provide a centralized gas distribution system within Global City.
