COUNCILORS in Quezon City have given Mayor Herbert Bautista the green light to acquire an air quality monitoring system designed to measure the volume of air pollutants and other particulate matter emitted by vehicles and establishments.

City Council Resolution No. SP 6905 of 2016 also authorized the mayor to allocate P19.5 million for the purpose.

Bautista said the project will be overseen by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ Environmental Protection and Waste Management department.

The air quality monitoring system will be operational this year, he added, with the city hall compound as the pilot area.

Citing a recent study conducted by the University of the Philippines’ Institute of Environmental Science and Meteorology, the city government said Katipunan Avenue and Quezon Avenue were identified as having the highest concentration of pollutants.

The UP-IESM has proposed to assist the city government in setting up an air pollution monitoring and management program and a health risk assessment for Quezon City to determine the risks of exposure to levels of inhalable outdoor pollution in hotspots that represent roadside, residential, recreational and urban background sites.

UP-IESM has scheduled a consultation meeting with Bautista, City Hall said.

The World Health Organization has classified Air Particulate Matter or APM — the invisible and inhalable components of air pollution — as the leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide, and has classified outdoor particles in general as cancerous.
