THE local government unit of Makati has recognized outstanding cooperatives in the city for gaining significant growth in membership size and total assets, and for showing remarkable concern for the community in 2015.

Mayor Abby Binay led the awarding ceremony, dubbed “Koopbida Awards Night Season 5,” held recently at the City Garden Grand Hotel.

The event was organized by the Makati Cooperative Development Office and Makati Cooperative Development Council.

“Makati salutes the exemplary cooperatives in our city for spurring economic growth and promoting social inclusion. You have proven that with proper management, cooperatives can become vehicles of sustainable and inclusive development,” Binay said.

She said the city government recognizes the great potential of cooperatives in empowering people, especially the marginalized and disadvantaged, to become self-reliant and productive members of society.

Among those feted for significant growth in total assets were first-placers PLDT Employees Credit Cooperative or PECCI (billionaire coop), Philippine Navy Finance Center Credit Cooperative (large coop), DBP Cooperative Credit Union (medium coop), Home Mortgage Multi-Purpose Cooperative (small coop), and GPDPNHS Employees and Family Multi-Purpose Cooperative (micro coop).

In terms of growth in membership size, the topnotch awardees were Ayala Multi-Purpose Cooperative (billionaire coop), Makati City Employees Multi-Purpose Cooperative or Macemco (large coop), BOI Employees Multi-Purpose Cooperative (medium), Manila Polo Club Employees Multi-Purpose Cooperative (small), and Progressive Teachers Multi-Purpose Cooperative (micro).

Another major highlight of the event was the launching of the Makati CDO Big Brother Program, which seeks to encourage big cooperatives to support the micro and small coops in the city through various forms of assistance, including training programs and scholarships.

“I would like to commend the MCDO, MCDC and our big-hearted successful cooperatives for having come up with this innovative program – the Makati CDO Big Brother Program whose main purpose is truly noble,” Binay said.

The mayor also exhorted the smaller cooperatives to draw inspiration from their “big brothers” in the sector.

“I hope that cooperatives in the micro, small and medium categories will always look to the bigger cooperatives for inspiration in setting their goals. To be able to grow your business, you must always strive to be competitive, be willing to go beyond your comfort zones,” Binay said.

She noted that through the MCDO, the city government has been able to track the progress of cooperatives of every size – from the micro up to the billionaire category. To date, the city has a total of 142 active cooperatives, including three in the billionaire category. It has 67 large and medium coops, 70 small and micro coops, one union and one federation.

Based on 2015 total assets, the other awardees in the billionaire category were PLDT Employees Multi-Purpose Cooperative, 2nd place, and Ayala Multi-Purpose Cooperative, 3rd place.

For large coops, Smart Communications Employees’ Multi-Purpose Cooperative and MACEMCO placed second and third, respectively.
