Manila cops going Segway

Taking a cue from Makati blue guards on Segway at the commercial district, Manila police officers are riding their own two-wheel transporters to give downtown a new look.

Senior Insp. Erwin Magarejo, spokesman, said the headquarters received 10 battery-powered scooters last May 1 to beef up anti-crime patrols in the capital.

Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada inspected Divisoria Monday night to find stalls along sidewalks keeping to the road right of way.

The usually clogged CM Recto with hawkers taking road space had given way to vehicles, which Magarejo was quick to note.

“Naging source of corruption (It was a source of corruption),” he said, adding that erring officers collected protection money from vendors.

“Ngayon yung kikitain ng mga bagong establishment sa Divisoria, mapupunta na sa kaban ng bayan, (Now proceeds from establishments in Divisoria will boost government coffers).”
